Bookstores That Are Actually Cool

The First Post In A New Series Subtitled: WHEN I RUN THE WORLD...

Folks, kids aren't reading like they used to. Neither are adults for that matter. Maybe if bookstores were more like hangin' at the club, that would change.

When I run the world...

Instead of B&N or Borders adding a token Starbucks, why don't they (or an independent) make the entire store more like a hip cafe? ...Have tables everywhere, and hire beautiful servers to *bring* you your coffee / scone / $5.00 bottle of water, so you can read in peace...and on those over priced water bottles, why not advertise the books they're selling in the store? Plus, they could cater better to geeks like me who actually prefer reading from a digital device sometimes. They could provide e-book download stations throughout the store. They could even bundle the e-book with the purchase of the hardcover or paperback, so for one price, you get all the formats. They could also provide laptops to use for online browsing while customers are in the store, with free WiFi. Heck, while they're at it, why not serve pizza! Beer! Wine! • Amen! I’ve always wished a digital version came with a paperback or hardback! Best of both worlds!

  • Yeah, and the more I think about it, the more sense it makes for authors to emulate a premium cable channel. Instead of buying the latest book by their favorite author, readers should *subscribe* for $10 bucks a month to the “Jeremy James” channel, or the “Natasha Fondren” channel. That would give them access to not only the finished books, but also the rough drafts, the outlines, a tally of the cups of coffee consumed, and the like.
